Sleep your way to happiness

stress, tips, happiness Add comments

This is not a new theme, the importance of sleep for happiness.  A well rested person thinks more clearly and is much less likely to react sharply at the slightest provocation.  A sleep-deprived person feels more stress and is less effective in everything he does.  There is a superb article with tips for getting a better night’s sleep.

Among the sensible tips:

  • Avoid a nightcap - alcohol impairs sleep
  • Don’t bring a TV to bed - for goodness sakes, is there no escaping that thing?!
  • Go to bed earlier
  • Don’t argue just before bed - stress makes for less “productive” sleeping

Good night.

Funny I find watching a movie before bed helps me sleep.

Great site and good post on sleep! When stressed, sleep tends to be the one thing that you need more of but cannot get. I use hypnotic CDs for my clients to help them get good quality sleep, the length of sleep is not relevant, it is the quality of what you get so that you wake up refreshed and ready to go! Your mind becomes clearer and you can step back to see what exactly is causing you stress or to lose sleep. Definitely no tv or reading in bed - the bedroom should be tranquil so that your mind knows that it’s sleep time.

Regarding TV, it really depends on what you are watching. Try closing your eyes and just listening to the TV show. You will hear that the sound track of most shows is exciting, not calming. The rate the pictures change is another factor that has been shown to increases stress. Try counting each time the camera switches frames. It’s incredibly quick-paced.

Perhaps watching the Teletubbies or a nature documentary could be calming.
